BREAKING: Nationals Extend GM/POBO Mike Rizzo

Image
With the Washington Nationals in the midst of a rebuild headed up by young star CJ Abrams, the team announced Wednesday that they have signed general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo to a multi-year contract extension, per MLB.com's Jessica Camerato. Rizzo was the Lerner family's first hire, dating back to 2006. He became General Manager in 2009, then moved to executive VP of baseball ops the following season before ascending to his current role in 2013. He has since guided the team through numerous trades, key signings and managerial changes. These moves have gotten the Nationals to the pinnacle with a World Series title in 2019 and have pivoted them towards long-term success. Also under Rizzo for an 8 year period from 2012-2019, the Nationals played to the tune of a .563 winning percentage - second best in the Majors behind only the Dodgers - and yielded four NL East titles (2012, '14, '16 and '17). In a team release, Rizzo stated “I love be...

Dak or Defense?

Image
We all saw how good the Dallas Cowboys defense can be in their week 1 destruction of the New York Giants as they pressured Daniel Jones on 1 of every 2 plays. They sacked Jones 7 times, caused a blocked field goal for a score and even won the turnover battle. But that was just the first game of the season. A game in which Dak Prescott didn't play much of a factor despite throwing for over 100 yards. It was all defense, defense, defense for the Dallas Cowboys in their opening night win. But owner Jerry Jones had high praise for his quarterback during his weekly remarks on Dallas sports talk radio station 105.3 The Fan. He praised Prescott saying tht he was 'the best leader that I've ever seen at that position.' Now this will beg the question - What does the D stand for or what should it stand for going forward: Defense or Dak? In week 1, it was Defense as was evidenced by the defensive domination of the New York Football Giants. But as the season goes along and we get in...

How The Orioles Went From Doormat To Penthouse

Image
When you think of the Baltimore Orioles, one of the first things that come to mind would be their iconic stadium - Camden Yards. Cal Ripken Jr. and his legendary iron man streak of consecutive games played also has to be on that list of proud Orioles moments alongside their 2014 AL East title run. But since that 2014 AL East title, the Orioles have made the postseason party only one other time - 2016, when they went 89-73. After that: 75-87 in 2017, then 110 loss seasons in 2018, '19 and '21 (115, 108 and 110 losses respectively).  But last season, things started to change for the Orioles despite missing the playoffs for a sixth straight season as they posted a winning record at 83-79. The question is what...what changed? What happened to the Orioles that helped them go from the MLB's doormat to the penthouse? It started with the Manny Machado deal to the Dodgers. In that trade, the Orioles would pick up someone who would become a big piece of their rotation in Dean Kremer....

Retraction

Yeah...so the Wander Franco situation - that's seriously touch and go at this point and no serious publication would dare to go to print with that kind of story unless they want a libel suit on their hands. So I've made the executive decision to spike the post and perhaps revisit the idea once more info comes to light.

BREAKING: Mets Get Their White Whale - David Stearns

Image
After two years of speculation and misfires, it has finally happened with two plus weeks left in baseball's regular season. Per ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan, Steve Cohen and the New York Mets have finally gotten the man they've pursued as President of Baseball Operations: Brewers President of Baseball Operations, Long Island native and life-long Mets fan David Stearns. Stearns brought the Brewers from the proverbial abyss and turned them into perennial contenders in the span of three years and now have made the Brewers a force within the NL Central. He also helped turn the Houston Astros from laughing stock of the AL West into powerhouses. He now brings that proven track record to a team that desperately needs a spark in the New York Mets. After having gone through three General Managers in now three seasons under owner Steve Cohen, subpar seasons and a short stint in the 2022 Postseason where they were soundly bounced by the Padres in the NL Wild Card Series, Stearns will com...

Aaron Rodgers Helped Off Field In Jets Debut

Image
This summer, the New York Jets went all in as they acquired Super Bowl champion quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. The Jets gave up 4 draft picks for Rodgers in the hopes that he would be the savior - the one that would lead Gang Green to the promised land of the Super Bowl. He had even restructured his contract to give the Jets more flexibility in terms of the salary cap. His much anticipated Jets debut would come on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on America - a nationally televisied Monday Night Football game against the AFC East rival Buffalo Bills. This is where things would go horribly wrong. It was a routine 1st down play. Jets were lined up in the gun package on offense with the Bills lined up in the dime defense. Rodgers is the kind of quarterback who can extend plays and make his own time in the pocket. However...that didn't happen. The protection from the offensive line broke down, which allowed Bills linebacker Leonard Floyd to easily pierc...

College Baskeball: Mike's Early Top 25

Image
We are 2 months shy of the start of the 2023-24 NCAA Mens' Basketball season on November 6, when the road to the Final Four at State Farm Stadium in Glendale will begin in earnest. With tipoff fast approaching, I think it's time to take a look at who I think are the top teams heading into the season and who will be the first four in, the last four in and the first four out in the road to Glendale. 1. UConn Would be pretty hard not to put the defending National Champions atop this list. Sure, the losses of Adama Sonago and Andre Jackson to the NBA Draft do hurt, but Tristen Newton is back and the losses of Sonago and Jackson are quickly offset by a top five recruiting class that includes combo guard Stephon Castle. Plus Cam Spencer is coming over from Rutgers to bring some experience and top-tier shooting ability. Expect the Huskies to be a threat for the National Title again. 2. Kansas The return of Kevin McCullar Jr. as well as incoming players Nick Timberlake and Hunter Dick...

MLB Preseason Favorites - Mets, Padres, Yankees: What Went Wrong?

Image
With just three weeks to go until baseball's postseason, the road to the World Series looks to run through Baltimore in the American League and Atlanta in the National League respectively. But what about the preseason favorites - the ones all the prognosticators expected to make it into the October party?  The Mets, Padres and Yankees all made significant upgrades over the past winter, spending big bucks on their rotation, their bullpens, their lineups all in an attempt to make it to October and potentially make a run at the World Series. But as Murphy's law dictates - whatever can go wrong will go wrong. And for the Mets, Padres and Yankees, that's exactly what happened. Whatever could go wrong did. So what really went wrong for these 3 teams? We begin with... NEW YORK METS The Mets under Steve Cohen have been no stranger to spending...and spending big. They lose arguably the best pitcher of a generation in Jacob deGrom to the Texas Rangers. Cohen counters by going out an...

Spingate - 10 Years Later

Image
For my first post in 3 years, let's take a look at one of the biggest controversies in NASCAR history. I'm talking about Spingate. To gain more insight on Spingate, let's first go back to September 7, 2013. It's the 2013 Federated Auto Parts 400 - thenn the 26th and final race in the NASCAR Cup Series regular season. Back then, 12 drivers qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup - 10 of which were in on points, the other 2 were wild cards: drivers 11th-20th in points based on how many wins a driver had in the 26 races leading up to the Chase. Heading into the regular season finale, Kasey Khane - then driving for Hendrick Motorsports - was the only driver locked into a wild card spot, having won 2 races on the season: Bristol in March and Pocono in August. New Jersey's own Martin Truex Jr. held the 2nd wild card with Ryan Newman right behind him. In order to ensure a Chase spot, Newman had to either win or finish 5 positions ahead of Truex and hope that Greg Biffl...
