BREAKING: Nationals Extend GM/POBO Mike Rizzo

With the Washington Nationals in the midst of a rebuild headed up by young star CJ Abrams, the team announced Wednesday that they have signed general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo to a multi-year contract extension, per MLB.com's Jessica Camerato.

Rizzo was the Lerner family's first hire, dating back to 2006. He became General Manager in 2009, then moved to executive VP of baseball ops the following season before ascending to his current role in 2013.

He has since guided the team through numerous trades, key signings and managerial changes. These moves have gotten the Nationals to the pinnacle with a World Series title in 2019 and have pivoted them towards long-term success.

Also under Rizzo for an 8 year period from 2012-2019, the Nationals played to the tune of a .563 winning percentage - second best in the Majors behind only the Dodgers - and yielded four NL East titles (2012, '14, '16 and '17).

In a team release, Rizzo stated “I love being part of the Washington Nationals organization. Nearly 17 years ago, Ted Lerner and his family asked me to help build the Nats into a winning team. Together, we managed to find success within just a few years, winning multiple divisional titles and, ultimately, bringing D.C. its first World Series championship since 1924.”

The Nationals opened the book on their next chapter at the 2021 trade deadline by sending Max Scherzer to the Dodgers for catcher Keibert Ruiz and starter Josiah Gray. The following season, Juan Soto was dealt with Josh Bell to the Padres for CJ Abrams, Mackenzie Gore, and top prospects James Wood and Robert Hassell III.

“Now, we believe we are developing the next generation of contenders and champions," Rizzo said in a press release. "We deeply believe in our process and in our progress. The next few years are going to be ones no Nationals fan will want to miss.”
