Sports And The Streaming Wars

Image
It's no secret that streaming has become the way people watch content nowadays. With the market being saturated by big players like Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and Disney+, the choices are out there. But is streaming really the best option when it comes to viewing your favorite sports? If Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 was any indication, survey says...no. The wars began in March 2021 when it was reported Amazon got the exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football starting in 2022. However, this was only a minor casualty as the NFL had prepared for this with a clause. That clause being that if a local team was playing on a non-natonally televised game, the game had to be shown on a local affiliate to the team in said game. This is to accomodate establishments like bars and restaurants which might not be equipped to handle streaming-only broadcasts. The next March, Apple signed a seven-year deal for Friday Night Baseball MLB televasts. Now this has been a source of contenton among...

The Legacy Of The Trenton Titans - 25 Years Later

Image
It's now been 25 years since the Titans first graced the ice of what is now Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton. The Titans were successful out of the gate, regularly selling out their home barn, posting the best record in the league in just their 2nd season and making the East Coast Hockey League's Kelly Cup Finals twice - winning it all in 2004-05 during the infamous NHL lockout that year. But after 14 seasons and three ownership changes, the Titans were no more, leaving Cure Insurance Arena empty in the fall and winter months. So what went wrong? Why was a successful minor league hockey team torn away from the fans after a little more than a decade? What is the legacy of the Titans 25 years later and...what will it take to bring them back? Origin To better understand the legacy of the Trenton Titans, let's first go back to 1996, when Trenton - New Jersey's capital - was awarded a franchise in the burgeoning East Coast Hockey League. Back then, the then 8 year old leagu...

BREAKING: Nationals Extend GM/POBO Mike Rizzo

Image
With the Washington Nationals in the midst of a rebuild headed up by young star CJ Abrams, the team announced Wednesday that they have signed general manager and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo to a multi-year contract extension, per MLB.com's Jessica Camerato. Rizzo was the Lerner family's first hire, dating back to 2006. He became General Manager in 2009, then moved to executive VP of baseball ops the following season before ascending to his current role in 2013. He has since guided the team through numerous trades, key signings and managerial changes. These moves have gotten the Nationals to the pinnacle with a World Series title in 2019 and have pivoted them towards long-term success. Also under Rizzo for an 8 year period from 2012-2019, the Nationals played to the tune of a .563 winning percentage - second best in the Majors behind only the Dodgers - and yielded four NL East titles (2012, '14, '16 and '17). In a team release, Rizzo stated “I love be...

Dak or Defense?

Image
We all saw how good the Dallas Cowboys defense can be in their week 1 destruction of the New York Giants as they pressured Daniel Jones on 1 of every 2 plays. They sacked Jones 7 times, caused a blocked field goal for a score and even won the turnover battle. But that was just the first game of the season. A game in which Dak Prescott didn't play much of a factor despite throwing for over 100 yards. It was all defense, defense, defense for the Dallas Cowboys in their opening night win. But owner Jerry Jones had high praise for his quarterback during his weekly remarks on Dallas sports talk radio station 105.3 The Fan. He praised Prescott saying tht he was 'the best leader that I've ever seen at that position.' Now this will beg the question - What does the D stand for or what should it stand for going forward: Defense or Dak? In week 1, it was Defense as was evidenced by the defensive domination of the New York Football Giants. But as the season goes along and we get in...

How The Orioles Went From Doormat To Penthouse

Image
When you think of the Baltimore Orioles, one of the first things that come to mind would be their iconic stadium - Camden Yards. Cal Ripken Jr. and his legendary iron man streak of consecutive games played also has to be on that list of proud Orioles moments alongside their 2014 AL East title run. But since that 2014 AL East title, the Orioles have made the postseason party only one other time - 2016, when they went 89-73. After that: 75-87 in 2017, then 110 loss seasons in 2018, '19 and '21 (115, 108 and 110 losses respectively).  But last season, things started to change for the Orioles despite missing the playoffs for a sixth straight season as they posted a winning record at 83-79. The question is what...what changed? What happened to the Orioles that helped them go from the MLB's doormat to the penthouse? It started with the Manny Machado deal to the Dodgers. In that trade, the Orioles would pick up someone who would become a big piece of their rotation in Dean Kremer....

Retraction

Yeah...so the Wander Franco situation - that's seriously touch and go at this point and no serious publication would dare to go to print with that kind of story unless they want a libel suit on their hands. So I've made the executive decision to spike the post and perhaps revisit the idea once more info comes to light.

BREAKING: Mets Get Their White Whale - David Stearns

Image
After two years of speculation and misfires, it has finally happened with two plus weeks left in baseball's regular season. Per ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan, Steve Cohen and the New York Mets have finally gotten the man they've pursued as President of Baseball Operations: Brewers President of Baseball Operations, Long Island native and life-long Mets fan David Stearns. Stearns brought the Brewers from the proverbial abyss and turned them into perennial contenders in the span of three years and now have made the Brewers a force within the NL Central. He also helped turn the Houston Astros from laughing stock of the AL West into powerhouses. He now brings that proven track record to a team that desperately needs a spark in the New York Mets. After having gone through three General Managers in now three seasons under owner Steve Cohen, subpar seasons and a short stint in the 2022 Postseason where they were soundly bounced by the Padres in the NL Wild Card Series, Stearns will com...
