Turnovers Prove Costly As Rams Fall To Trenton Central
Tuesday night, the Rams returned home on the heels of winning back to back games to face the Tornadoes of Trenton Central, who were on a 3-game win streak of their own. It was a slow start for both teams as Trenton Central took an 11-6 lead after the opening frame.
Hightstown seemed to hold their own during the opening quarter as they limited turnovers and took care of the ball. But the 2nd quarter was where the wheels fell off as Trenton Central employed the Mike D’Antoni 7-second play style, using it to pull out to a 17-point halftime advantage, leading by as many as 20 at one point.
While the Rams stayed tough throughout the game, despite not being able to make their shots and a glaring turnover issue, they just could not recover, and they end up falling to the Tornadoes by a 56-40 final.
Turnovers became an issue in the 2nd quarter and shots not falling, not getting high-percentage looks, became apparent at the halftime break.
Those are issues that need to be corrected as the Rams head into a difficult stretch ahead against Ewing at home, followed by road tilts against Notre Dame and Hun before returning home on February 24th against Jackson Liberty following the Mercer County Tournament play-in rounds.
Big takeaway here – in order to beat Trenton Central, you play their game and play it better than them. Ruin their fast breaks with contact, pressure their shooters and take care of the ball.
Also, before a game against Trenton Central – research how Mike D’Antoni ran the show in Phoenix while he was coach of the Suns, especially after he got perennial All-Stars Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Shaquille O’Neal. That’s how you defeat the Tornadoes.
